Charles M. Daniels Collection/SDASM
....o r is the P-51D the most beautifully proportioned piston fighter of all time?

Shhhhhhh....The British contingent will get all up in arms and we’ll have Spitfire Hooligans burning the place down. We know the truth, though.

Supermarine Spitfire would like to know your location

I’ve been more of a P-47 / F4 U kind of guy.

Nope, not just you.
And, similarly to people’s opinions about the E-Type, I’ve never loved the Spitfire.
The 51D is the perfect combination of compact, fast, altitude, maneuverability, and
downright bitchin
.
There are certainly other awesome planes out there, but nothing that comes close to the Mustang.

Are you applying for the job as spokesman for Hotels.com? :)

They have that weird belly bulge though. My vote goes for the Mig-3.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:34 |

It would certainly be a contender.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:35 |

Or the Polikarpov I-16.

The Fiat G. 55 rates right up there for me too...
It and the MiG 3 have similar lines... I give the intakes and tail a slight edge in the MiG, but the Italians made a damn pretty plane too.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:37 |
|
A worthy contender, but still not as perfect.

The Jug is like a thick girl, the Corsair is like that girl who is pretty, but not classically pretty. You have to king of get to know her before you realize she’s really pretty.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:39 |

Not on purpose.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:39 |

Oooh, I likey. For some reason I completely forgot about the Italian planes.

The Soviet Brewster Buffalo.

The belly bulge, as you put it, perfectly balances the cockpit bulge, but is slightly aft, which makes the whole thing look like it’s leaning forward.

Gonna have to disagree with you there, bud. Supermarine Spitfire has to take top for me, followed by the Hawker Tempest V.

So it can strafe the daylights out of ya!!
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:49 |

Maybe not as graceful, but my favorite is the Vought F4U Corsair. Kind of like Sean Connery’s Bond to your Roger Moore.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:53 |

Ah yes, twitchy, surprisingly fast, armed to the teeth and ugly as sin.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 19:53 |

I can think of a few challengers, but it’s certainly up there.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 20:08 |

It certainly leaves you in no doubt that it’s comin’ ta getch a.

The spit gets the win in pl an view just bec au se of those wings, but the side view’s pretty undistinguished.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 20:22 |

That looks like a very early Spit.

Remember, I’m talking about proportions. Not just looks.

I do like more how the radial engined version of Focke-Wulf Fw 190 look like. The later ones with the V12 engines look goofy though . The clos er (virtual) example is a radial engined A-8 and the other is a V-engined D-9.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 20:48 |

Ive always dug the mig-3
![]() 03/30/2020 at 20:48 |

And an inverted V at that. The Germans loved their inverted Vs. This really got funky with the Ta-152.

I really wish there was video/audio of Chrysler’s hemi inverted v-16 they tried back then was tested in the p-40 progenetor....

It is, I kinda cheated. Thats a preproduction one lol.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 21:01 |

Thats a good choice as well.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 21:08 |

Not just preproduction, that’s the one and only prototype (K5054).

Proportionally, the Mustang is probably best. If we’re moving on to jet fighters, though. The SU-27 family tends to make me weak in the knees
![]() 03/30/2020 at 21:48 |

I’ve always thought the Tempest was a good looking aircraft... Muscular, mena cing, forward weighted like a bomb ready to explode on it’s target. The taper of the fuselage is a perfect ratio for the monster chin intake and chunky tail.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 21:49 |
|
My all time favorite jet fighter is the F-15C. But I’ve got lots of favorites from all generations.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 21:51 |

But that nose pairs perfectly with those unique wings.
![]() 03/30/2020 at 22:27 |

The vertical is a bit too small and the low tail wheel makes it look kind of handicapped whe n it is taxiing. But other than that it is perfect. The radiator duct underneath would look goofy on any other fuselage. Bit for the mustang it works.

For sure. The tempest is actually my favorite looking plane from ww2 but i couldnt quite give it the title of most beautiful.
